Washington Park: A Kid’s Daydream

Amidst the lovely flower gardens, lakes and wide expanse of towering trees and lush grass, there is no more idyllic setting than Washington Park Denver. This iconic park was designated in 2012 by the American Planning Association as one of the “Great Public Spaces in America.” With biking trails, a state-of-the-art recreation center,  jogging path, soccer fields, tennis courts, volleyball, lawn bowling and water sports, you’ll find almost every form of outdoor recreation in this 165 acre park. Arguably, a kid’s daydream.

Family and kid-friendly activities abound in this popular Denver neighborhood, located southeast of downtown. As one of the most frequented parks in the Denver Parks system, the area is teeming with organized activities and events for children. Below you’ll find some of the most popular things to do in this beloved area of the Mile High City, conveniently located right off I-25 and Downing Street. In addition to the park activities, there are nearby restaurants and interesting architectural styles of homes to see.

Family Picnics

At the top of the list of things to do should be a picnic in the park. It’s easy and kids love eating outside. Spread a blanket or check out the four designated picnic areas which are all close to the three lakes in Washington Park: Lilly Pond, and Smith and Grasmere Lakes. With plenty of shade, there is no better place to enjoy summer with your family.

Playgrounds

There are two playgrounds conveniently located in the park. The playground close to Smith Lake and the boathouse is designed for children up to 12 years old. Another playground, closer to Grasmere Lake on the south side, is more suitable for toddlers with specifically constructed equipment for smaller bodies. These aren’t just fun, they’re a Kid’s Daydream.

Walk/Bike Around the Park

One of the best ways to delight in all that Washington Park has to offer is to walk or bike around the nearly 3 mile perimeter. From sunup to sundown, you’ll find people of all ages using this loop that offers a great layout and exceptional people watching opportunities. Hitting the trails is a great way to get your day started or a perfect way to de-stress after work. Your kids will love it, too.

Mount Vernon Flower Garden

Located on the southeast side of the park, this garden is bursting in color during the spring and summer months. These flower gardens were built in the 1930s and are patterned after George Washington’s gardens at Mount Vernon in Mount Vernon, Va. Stroll through the setting and enjoy the wide variety to flowers and foliage.

Avid4Adventure

Kids ages 5 through 13 will be over the moon with the course offerings at Avid4Adventure. This camp offers instruction in kayaking, stand up paddle boarding, mountain biking, skateboarding, rock climbing and survival skills, to name just a few. With its convenient location at Washington Park, there is no reason to go elsewhere.

Paddle Boating

Get in on some water fun and cruise around Smith Lake in a paddle boat. If you can ride a bike, you can “pedal a boat.” Bask in the sun, savor the cool breeze off the water and watch the fish jump. Two- and four-passenger boats are available for rent. kids will love knowing they help propel the boat!

Old South Pearl

Regardless of the season, the nearby neighborhood of Old South Pearl offers a variety of outdoor activities. From farmer’s markets to outdoor festivals, there is no better place to spend a day. There is a healthy selection of restaurants, ice cream and coffee shops, a brew pub, services and boutiques. You’ll find people strolling down the street, window shopping or walking their dogs. It’s no wonder this is a highly sought-after neighborhood of Denver
